Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. From its Galveston, Texas origin in 1865, the observance of June 19th as the African American Emancipation Day has spread across the United States and beyond.

It was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Note that this was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation – which had become official January 1, 1863. The Emancipation Proclamation had little impact on the Texans due to the minimal number of Union troops to enforce the new Executive order. However, with the surrender of General Lee in April of 1865, and the arrival of General Granger’s regiment, the forces were finally strong enough to influence and overcome the resistance.

Later attempts to explain this two and a half year delay in the receipt of this important news have yielded several versions that have been handed down through the years. The celebration of June 19th was coined “Juneteenth” and grew with more participation from descendants. The Juneteenth celebration was a time for reassuring each other, for praying and for gathering remaining family members. Juneteenth continued to be highly revered in Texas decades later, with many former slaves and descendants making an annual pilgrimage back to Galveston on this date.’

Today Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. It is a day, a week, and in some areas a month marked with celebrations, guest speakers, picnics and family gatherings. It is a time for reflection and rejoicing. It is a time for assessment, self-improvement and for planning the future. Its growing popularity signifies a level of maturity and dignity in America long overdue. In cities across the country, people of all races, nationalities and religions are joining hands to truthfully acknowledge a period in our history that shaped and continues to influence our society today. Sensitized to the conditions and experiences of others, only then can we make significant and lasting improvements in our society.

Hola, my name is Keila Manjarres and I’m 22 years old. I’m an undergraduate at the University of Arkansas. I’m a communications major but I hope to go on and get my masters. I was born in Escondido California, but raised in Arkansas. I love Arkansas, the weather the people the southern hospitality and of course the Razorbacks! I have 2 brothers and 1 sister. They are such a big part of my life and very blessed to have them. My brothers are 28 and 23; my sister is 6 and a hand full. I come from a single parent household so everything I ‘am is because of my mother. I can tell my mother anything and I’m so blessed to have that kind of relationship with her. My ethnicity is Mexican-American. I very proud of who I am and of my heritage, I’m also bilingual so I speak English and Spanish. I’m a very strong believer of hard work and that with it you can achieve many things. I’m a very optimistic person and I do believe in miracles. This is my strength but also my weakness. I like to see the good in people, and I feel that each day given to us is a day that we can better ourselves and the lives of others. With school and working I don’t really have a lot time, but I am a very proud member of Gamma Eta Sorority. Gamma Eta is a Sorority like no other. It’s a multicultural sorority. It’s such a great organization that is going nowhere but up. Our motto is Hoy y Siempre which means now and forever. I’m a regular girl that likes to just have fun with friends. I’m a very outgoing person and easy to get along with, and I love meeting new people. I absolutely love to dance. I could do it all day. My favorite sport is basketball; I played it all through elementary and High school. My favorite season is summer, I love summers in northwest Arkansas it’s just so relaxing. I love to watch movies especially comedies. I also love taking pictures and being girly. I’ve done some shots with some local photographers which has been great. And recently had an opportunity to do one with Sue Lee photography, such a great person and great at what she does. I try to live each day as if it was my last. I’m very excited to what life holds for me, and always blessed to see another day.
